TIPS & ADVICE
How to determine the size of your chart

Details of how to calculate the size of various charts are shown under the information for each programme that Family Tree Printing supports. An alternative way of calculating is to Specify that you will be printing on A4 paper and then examine the chart on the screen or in print preview.
To determine width:
Count the number of pages wide and multiple it by 8.25 (in.).
To determine height:
Count the number of pages high and multiple it by 11.69 (in.)

Most of the paper on which your chart is printed is available in

24" - 61cm 33" - 84cm 36" - 92cm 42" - 107 cm 60" - 152 cm But I can print up to 196" - 5m

widths so once you have chosen your measurement, find the nearest width above.

Then divide the longest distance by 12 to calculate the number of feet in length, remember that distances and go to the Prices page where you will find price calculators for the various charts.

Is there a restriction on the fonts available

You should generally limit the fonts in your chart to those which are installed automatically with the operating system, remember that the font size will be small (normally 10pt or less) so you need to choose one that will be clear and legible.  Please contact Family Tree Printing if you are unsure about the font that you would like to use.

How big can my chart be

The printer accommodates paper which is 17", 24", 33", 36" 42" or 60" but I can work upto 196" 5m wide wide and up to 160 ft long. Your chart will be printed in portrait or landscape mode, whichever is appropriate, and on the smallest roll of paper on which it will fit.

As described above, one side of your chart must be 196" 5m or less and the other side must be 164 ft or less. Charts submitted in Postscript format are limited to 129 inches in length. If your chart exceeds any of these limits, then it will be printed on multiple sheets of paper. In that case, each sheet will be considered a separate chart for the sake of calculating price.

How much do charts cost

All charts are priced according to their total size in square feet, In this way, you only pay for the paper and ink that you use.

Can I save money on my chart

Remember that the price of your chart is based on its size.  You may be able to reduce its size in order to reduce the costs. It is often possible to reduce the overall chart size by specifying a smaller box size, box spacing and fonts but the method of achieving this will vary according to the program.

Minimize white space. The size of the chart is defined by the contents of the file that you send. You may be able to reduce the size of the overall chart (and your cost) by minimizing white space. For instance, avoid excessive margins and spacing between boxes.

While it may be nice to have a wall chart covering 20 or 30 generations, you might consider choosing fewer generations in order to reduce the size and price of the chart. In particular, if you have a single ancestral line that far exceeds the number of generations in the rest of the chart, you may be paying for a lot of white space.

Although descendant box charts which "flow" downward from the top are very popular, a comparable chart which "flows" left to right may take up much less space because the long ends of the boxes (rather than the short ends) are adjacent to one another. Consider changing the orientation of your chart.

Non-white backgrounds (i.e. images or solid colours) sometimes result in stunning charts. But because it uses much more ink, a chart with a colour background is more expensive. Consider changing your chart to use a white background instead and use coloured lines/boxes or occasional embedded photographs to give the chart some more visual appeal.

Quantity discounts of upto 40% for extra charts ordered at the same time are available so if you think that other family members may want copies of your chart, it is cheaper to buy them all at once than in separate orders.
